If you are new to writing - we can help you find and develop your writing voice. Master the art of storytelling with experienced industry professionals.
Whether you want to write for television, film, radio, stage or novels we can teach you the skills needed to flex your creative muscles.
It is important to us that every writer gets the most from our seminars and writing programmes. To ensure this - it is essential that all writers are in the correct programme to match with their current writing ability / stage of their writing career.
Our Level 1 writing development programmes will help you build your knowledge and confidence as you begin to build your writing portfolio. Please note that our seminars are open entry - meaning that writers of all levels of ability are welcome to attend.
Level 2: Emerging Writers
Our Level 2 writing development programmes will enhance your knowledge and confidence as you continue to build your writing portfolio. Please note that our seminars are open entry - meaning that writers of all levels and ability are welcome to attend.
Level 2 development writing programmes are designed for writers who have now learnt the basics of storytelling and are ready to move onto the next stage of their writing career. It is for TV and Film writers ready to move from the short form to 30 minute narratives, or for experienced writers wishing to hone skills in a new or specific area of writing.
Writers can really begin to push forward on their techniques and ability with a real view to breaking into the industry.
Our Level 2 writing for television and adaptation programmes are all about learning to work to existing formats - the real 'bread and butter' of working within the industry.
Level 3: Newly Established / Established Writers
Our Level 3 writing development programmes will continue to enhance your voice, knowledge and confidence as you build your writing portfolio to show your skills in a longer form, particularly within your original work.
Level 3 is for writers who want to increase their knowledge within the more advanced scriptwriting forms, want to push themselves into new areas of expertise, need support on a particularly tricky project or simply require deadlines to get that script finished.
Level 3 programmes are designed for writers who have mastered the art of storytelling and now wish to write a Radio, TV, Stage or Film 45, 60, 75 or 90 minute original narrative. SMART is also there for writers who wish to work to existing formats writing for 60-minute television series.
Level 4: Well Established Writers
Level 4 is for writers who have already mastered their skills, either by studying for an MA in Screenwriting / Scriptwriting - or because they are already working within the industry.
Level 4 (as with Level 3) will continue to enhance your voice, knowledge and confidence as you build your writing portfolio to show your skills, particularly within your original work.
Level 4 is for trained or established writers who want to push themselves into new areas of expertise, just need support on a particular project or require deadlines to get that script finished.
Writers with previous experience in the writing programme of their choice - are able to 'opt out' of the intensive weekend(s) section of the programme (at a reduced rate) - stepping straight into the distance workshop process. Of course if this is a new area of expertise, Level 4 writers can take the full programme too. This 'opt out' option is only available to SMART Level 4 writers, which means experienced writers can come back again and again whenever our help is needed.
At SMART we are creating a writing community - supporting careers and assisting writers through every stage of the development process, from new ideas to those existing tricky projects.
